Kine Per week said “The latest strong ‘crooks slip out’ is actually peopled which have a colourful diversity out-of vital and you may arresting emails, and these, skilfully manipulated by the journalist and you can director, enable the film in order to tread drinking water effortlessly. It’s just on finish it starts to break down, nevertheless the smack-right up finale rescues it regarding the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it has zero high difficulties for the lifestyle off its extremely unappealing term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The film movements at the a simple pace, new talk are smooth and you can characterisations fundamentally energetic. Dick Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct the fresh new throw skillfully, given that investigator is actually played with considerable aplomb from the that person identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding the The new Yorker detailed “This terse and tight flick noir try considering the brand new romantic and you may top-notch issues of your label reputation, the fresh criminal genius (played because of the Cock Powell) at the rear of a posh unlawful gambling establishment. The newest film’s copywriter and you can manager, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess online game, for mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the casino and you can old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely regulated body gestures off like and you may danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will fashionably cocky pictures (and additionally their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle an invisible classic of the style.” [ 10 ]

Image has motion and you may anticipation, and you will certain brief suits from humor to include taste. Ace performances of the Knob Powell, because the a playing house overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since a police inspector, and additionally up the score . While the spot uses a common trend, brand new characterizations are new and the performances sufficient to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney touching. Unusual camera basics show up now and then so you’re able to intensify interest and you will briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling while the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original author and you will representative manufacturer, and additionally supports rendering it a softer creation.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a point of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through their paces stylishly when you’re an enormous cast out-of actors and you will stars render him classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little lady exactly who brings out the newest finest in your and you will Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and slinky vixen just who becomes your for the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty because the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of able trip given that an exhausted police inspector just who ultimately shuts the actual situation. Many ingesting and you may smoking is performed by the all of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, writing throughout the Observer told you: “It hardly shown motion picture noir is the chill, regulated directorial debut of your own kept-wing writer whom proceeded while making like classics since the All the the fresh King’s Guys and also the Hustler .” [ 13 ]
